    Woody and forest-like vegetation only occurred on the fringes of perennial rivers, although improverished(угнетенный) and degraded forms were present along temporary watercourses, dongas and where outcrops (of dolerit dikes) brought groundwater (грунтовые воды) to the surface .
    Large areas of hillslopes in the False Upper Caroo are also covered by associations of A, with dominant association of B on gentle slopes, and of C on the steeper hillsides. These are all quite open associations with abundant grass coverage, interpersed with dwarf shrubs, low trees and patches of shrubs, all representing a sclerophyllous evergreen savanna shrub. .
    In the western part these woods belong to the type A, whilst further eastward the type B dominate. These are not tall woods, and average height vary between 4 and 10 m. On the numerous steep (dolerite) hillsides found between points A and B, mainly two associations predominate .
    This "forest reserve" is primarily grassland: montane from 1 300 to 1 800 m. with subalpine and alpine communities above 1 800 m .

    Etymology: The primary verbal noun μύλη (accent as e.g. μάχη) with the secondarily arising μύλος (after λίθος or ὄνος ἀλέτης?) like the primary yot-present μύλλω deviate through the υ-vowel from the other cognate words for `grind', which show an e: o-vocalism: Celt., OIr. melim, Slav., e.g. OCS meljǫ (IE * mel-); Germ., e.g. Goth. malan, Lith. malù, Hitt. 3. sg. mallai (IE * mol-); Lat. molō, on itself ambiguous, prob. from * melō like OIr. melim. In μυλ- we must assume a zero- [or reduced] grade variant (ml̥-; mel-?) (Schwyzer 351). With μύλλω from *ml̥-i̯ō agree in Germ. OHG muljan, OWNo. mylia `crush'; on the meaning s. below, on the υ -vowel cf. φύλλον against Lat. folium. A weak grade appears also in Welsh malu `grind', as well as in Arm. malem `crush'. An u-vowel could also be found in the reduplicated Arm. ml-ml-em `rub'; (it could however also be drived from lengthened grade mēl- or mōl). The technical meaning `grind' might have been specialized from the general `rub'.     Scottish co-inventor of the polyester fibre, Terylene.

    The introduction of one type of artificial fibre encouraged chemists to look for more. J.T.Dickson and J.R. Whinfield discovered one such fibre in 1941 when they derived polyester from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. Dickson, a 21-year-old Edinburgh graduate, was working under Whinfield at the Calico Printers' Association research laboratory at Broad Oak Print Works in Accrington. He was put onto fibre research: probably in April, but certainly by 5 July 1941, a murky-looking resin had been synthesized, out of which Dickson successfully drew a filament, which was named "Terylene" by its discoverers. Owing to restrictions imposed in Britain during the Second World War, this fibre was developed initially by the DuPont Company in the USA, where it was marketed under the name "Dacron". When Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) were able to manufacture it in Britain, it acquired the brand name "Terylene" and became very popular. Under the microscope, Terylene appears identical to nylon: longitudinally, it is completely devoid of any structure and the filaments appear as glass rods with a perfectly circular cross-section. The uses of Terylene are similar to those of nylon, but it has two advantages. First, it can be heat-set by exposing the fabric to a temperature about 30°C higher than is likely to be encountered in everyday use, and therefore can be the basis for "easy-care" clothing such as drip-dry shirts. It can be blended with other fibres such as wool, and when pressed at a high temperature the creases are remarkably durable. It is also remarkably resistant to chemicals, which makes it particularly suitable for industrial purposes under conditions where other textile materials would be degraded rapidly. Dickson later worked for ICI.

       Within the AI community there is a growing dissatisfaction concerning the adequacy of sequential models to simulate the cognitive processes....
       For an example of the dissimilarity between computers and nervous systems, consider that in conventional computers... each piece of data [is] located in its own special space in the memory bank [and] can be retrieved only by a central processor that knows the address in the memory bank for each datum. Human memory appears to be organized along entirely different lines. For one thing, from a partial or a degraded stimulus human memory can "reconstruct" the rest, and there are associative relationships among stored pieces of information based on considerations of context rather than on considerations of location.... t now appears doubtful that individual neurons are so specific that they are tuned to respond to a single item and nothing else. Thus, connectionist models tend to devise and use distributed principles, which means that elements may be selective to a range of stimuli and there are no "grandmother cells."...
       Information storage, it appears, is in some ill-defined sense a function of connectivity among sets of neurons. This implies that there is something fundamentally wrong in understanding the brain's memory on the model of individual symbols stored at unique addresses in a data bank....
       A further source of misgivings about the computer metaphor concerns real-time constraints. Although the signal velocities in nervous systems are quite slow in comparison to those in computers, brains are nonetheless far, far faster than electronic devices in the execution of their complex tasks.
